New Community Pool Set to Open in July — Staffing Shortages May Limit Hours and Capacity

Maple Creek, SK – The Town is pleased to share that construction of the new community swimming pool remains on schedule, with an anticipated opening in early July. However, due to a shortage of seasonal staff, the facility may operate on a limited schedule and reduced capacity for its first season of operation.

To run the pool at full capacity, with full programming and maintain regular operating hours, the Town requires nine (9) trained staff, including supervisors and lifeguards. To date, not enough applications have been received to meet this staffing target. As a result, pool hours may be scaled back, and the number of users allowed in the facility at any given time will be limited to ensure safety and compliance with provincial regulations.

In addition, swimming lessons will not be offered this summer. Those seeking lessons are advised to look at alternative programs in the region, such as those available at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.

This challenge is part of a wider issue affecting communities across the southwest region. On Friday, April 25, the Town of Gull Lake announced on Facebook that its pool may not open at all this summer due to an ongoing shortage of applicants for lifeguard positions.

The Town remains committed to opening the pool this summer in the safest way possible and continues to encourage individuals interested in seasonal employment to apply. By increasing staffing, the community can work toward expanded hours and services.
